Balance Studios is a media boutique comprised of three divisions: ANIMATION / VISUAL FX, ADVANCED INTERACTIVE MEDIA, and MOTION MEDIA PRODUCTION — with each division empowered to work independently, as well as to work in concert toward the development of multi-faceted campaigns. We work hand-in-hand with our international client base to identify and understand their needs, their brand, and their desired results; and then we recommend the most appropriate media tools for accomplishing those goals. In our approach, Balance Studios whole-heartedly believes in the value of multi-purposing created assets. Content, for example, generated during the development of 3D animation for a client might be -- and generally should be -- of use in multiple venues for that client, such as TV, Film, Website, DVDs, Events, Print Collateral, Signage, etc., to maximize the return on investment.

'From Paper To Iron' Civil War Exhibit Touchscreen Table X

  • Wisconsin Veterans Museum 0
PlayWisconsin Veterans Museum

To view these videos you must have Quicktime version 7.0 or higher, which you can download here.

'From Paper To Iron' Civil War Exhibit Touchscreen Table

The Wisconsin Veterans Museum purchased a multi-gestural touch screen table to display information about Wisconsin's Civil War regiments. The table includes photo-real 3D, 3D animation movies, and information for each regiment includes - flags, maps, photos and letters from actual soldiers. The visitor is able to access the information through three main touch points - Regiment Maps, a Quarterly Report (lists out all of the regiments broken up by artillery, cavalry and infantry) and a photo frame.

A very unique aspect of this development is that all of the information is multi-layered. That is, Balance was able to custom design and program the base program, by incorporating additional Flash programming, to add animation and multiple layers of information which allowed the organization and integration of a tremendous about of information. The alternative option was the standard application/table design which only allows information to display on the table's main interface at all times-this was not a practical solution for how the table needed to function.

Once the visitor accesses information, they can 'slide', 'rotate', and 'push', the information around the table and share with other visitors.

In addition to the interactive component, Balance's animation department used photos of actual artifacts from the war and created them in 3D, allowing the visitor to see the artifact including full 360 rotation and information about how the piece was used. These 3D objects were also used in marketing materials and other areas of the exhibit. Please check them out at BalanceAnimationStudios.com

Please take a look at this link, provided by the Veteran's Museum, that demonstrates the tables unique functionality and interactivity.

When meeting the Catholic Exchange, their website was built on a WordPress platform with thousands of pages from years of various individuals working on the site. Initially, they were looking for a facelift to meet their current needs of a more "modern" website. It became apparent that the website needed an overhaul - from design to navigational structure. The website needed to be kept in WordPress due to the tremendous amount of content found on the website and in the archives. Balance created the visual brand, including a new logo, as well as the custom website design and hand-illustrations of the bloggers and columnists. Two of the Catholic Exchange's goals were to have the entire website maintained via the WordPress admin and encourage new member sign up and data capture for marketing purposes, which the new site is helping with. Since the site has launched, the Catholic Exchange has expanded their new visual brand to an eNewsletter and eZine and increased the number of visitors to the website significantly.

NationalRRMuseum.org

The National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, WI, had a particular item on exhibition that they thought was in need of expert restoration — so they turned to Balance Studios to put things back on “track” for them. (‘Twas their Web site, of course!)

The Railroad Museum already had a very strong visual identity in their printed materials and in the decorative/educational elements displayed within their museum, however the website was pale by comparison. Content required significant updating as well, so museum staff seized upon the opportunity to commission a simultaneous overhaul in design and architecture, and to implement several new dynamic media offerings into the site.

Balance went to work, first by retrofitting the legacy coal-and-steam mechanics with a modern system of silicon chips and kilobytes, and then a visual, icon-based interactive “museum-style” experience was created for visitors that would have appeal not just for train enthusiasts, but also for museum buffs and the general public.

Built with .NET, the Railroad Museum website empowers museum staff members with administration tools to conveniently modify much of the site’s content themselves via a user-friendly back-end interface. This regeneration of ‘nationalRRmuseum.org‘ should ensure that information on the site remains current and powering forward like the well-maintained locomotive engines preserved in the museum’s impressive collection.

Since the new website has been launched, visitor traffic has doubled and online membership has risen significantly. Visitors spend much longer perusing the content. (And we hope for the Museum that all of this translates into an increase in visitor pilgrimage to their real-world Railroad Museum as well!)

Thank you for the fantastic job on the new National Railroad Museum’s website. The process went very well and INSPIRE was a god-send.

Communications were top notch. The process was virtually pain-less. You guys run a very professional operation. There wasn’t much room for improvement.

We have had very positive responses so far and have even sold one online membership. I’ll share some more of the positive comments with you later this week.

'From Paper To Iron' Civil War Exhibit Touchscreen Table X

Green Bay A to Z Exhibit

The Neville Public Museum was looking to for fun and interactive exhibit venue for museum patrons to experience and view over 1 million images that show the history of Green Bay taken by the Green Bay Press Gazette as well as to teach the patrons about cataloging. Balance worked with the Neville to create an engaging and highly interactive touch-screen kiosk, displayed on multi touch-screens, based on the traditional Card Cataloging systems. Creating the Card Catalog in 3D and utilizing a Flash front end and a custom Content Management System built in .NET the tremendous of information is categorized alphabetically with subcategories of the associated letters found "inside" the corresponding card catalog drawer. The site administrator can add in unlimited numbers of images, video and audio pieces and 'attach' any related multi-media assets to ensure museum patrons can see all information associated with any particular image. Utilizing a keyword system and a custom search feature, the patron is also able to view all the images that appear in the keyword search from the main and subcategories.

Additionally, Balance also helped create an application that connects the current museum collection software and the new kiosk custom CMS. The application is a tremendous time saver as it allows the site administrator to easily transfer large amount of information from their current collection database directly into the new exhibit touch-screen kiosks.

ManitowocLibrary.org

Manitowoc Public Library is the center of information for Manitowoc County, both within the library walls and their online presence. Because of the amount of data stored at the library and on their servers, a majority of the information was not accessible both online and off. The initial project brief entailed a complete overhaul of their online web presence and internal intranet system. The end goal… to have a more user-friendly and organized website that houses the enormous amount of content made assessable to every demographic.

An enormous CMS system was designed and implemented as MPL needed the ability to enter many items, in many places, quickly with zero downtime. As the website is “link intensive”, creating a link repository was needed where one link and information is deployed to multiple areas of the website at one time by simply clicking button. Additionally, the new links are automatically validated as “live” links eliminating the need for an intra-site live-link search through each section of the website to make changes and then re-upload the data to the servers.

In addition, MPL wanted a friendly, accessible environment where library patrons of varying ages: adults, teens and kids, could find suggested material, related information, and events happening in and around the library.

Working directly with their internal marketing department, the Balance team created “fun and relevant” landing pages for these individual sections to attract, engage and retain visitors.

In addition to the custom Content Management System, Balance Studios also concepted, designed, and developed an intricate intranet system, housing a robust document storage application to allow library staff to access internal events and documents anywhere the internet is available.

Less than a year ago we began our search for a website developer who could provide us with a workable content management system within an attractive and efficient design. We spoke with a number of companies who had the means to create a site, but all left us with a feeling that, though workable, the result would be a cookie cutter design that would not reflect Manitowoc Public Library.

After speaking with Tina Lutz and Heidi Katchkey, we felt we found a company that understood our goals and our vision for the end result. When we met the rest of the Balance Studios team we were sure of it! Balance Studios presented a clear, comprehensive plan, broken down into workable tasks. Our former website was huge; it was far too obviously the result of successive committees and had grown exponentially and chaotically over the years. Our goal was to bring it down to a reasonable size, increase its effectiveness, integrate a user-friendly CMS, an intranet, make it far more attractive and organized, and automate as much as possible.

As we move into Beta Testing, we have achieved just that. Additionally, the way the site works will save us time, enable a number of people to populate the site, and keep its growth under control. Heidi Katchkey has been especially helpful guiding us through the process and keeping us on task. She has also been gracious about explaining technical issues to our non-technical staff (that would be me) in easy to understand English. We are pleased we chose Balance Studios for this project and look forward to our continuing our relationship with them.

Our partnership with Balance Studios in the development the Pullman Porter exhibit created a relationship unlike anything I have ever experienced in more than 15 years in the museum field. Their involvement included developing a comprehensive multi-media marketing package that included an exhibit brand, logo, web banner ads, and collateral materials such as a gallery guide, a fund-raising video, television commercial, and dedicated website. They topped it off with a dynamic educational component that produced a first-rate video production, a touch screen kiosk that featured oral history components and audio clips of music performances.

Using 3D animation, Balance Studios brought our Pullman Porter exhibit to life. The three-dimensional avatar created by their capable animation team raised the level of our exhibit from good to world-class. Best of all, the process was painless. Using their proprietary software INSPIRE allowed for seamless communication between our staff and their key developers. The pairing of their avatar with our historic railcar and artifacts, and Balance Studios’ complete marketing and educational package provides visitors with a truly unique museum experience. Balance Studios provides a total exhibit and multimedia package that no one else offers, and they do it on time!

Whenever I’m finished with a speech, my main concern is if the product pleased the customer and if they received what they expected for their investment.Thank you for going the extra mile. You went out of your way (to Denmark) to be sure we had the proper setting. I am very pleased with the videos and just love the website. Remember when we first met, I said I wanted something unique, classy and it must reflect my personality? The Balance team hit a home run. You stepped up the plate and got it done. I’ve received many compliments on the site. People always ask, “Did you have it done professionally?” Not only did I have it done professionally, I had the best!

Thanks Again,

Ceili Rain is an international Celtic Rock band founded by Bob Halligan Jr. Halligan is one of the most renowned songwriters of our time. His songs (over 800 and counting) are recorded and sung by artist such as KISS, Cher, Jodi Meesina and Judas Priest to name a few. Balance Studios began working with Ceili Rain nine years ago to revitalize the Ceili Rain brand. Starting with a full review and breakdown of their brand, understanding who they were when they started, who they currently were and who they wanted to be.

The first step was creating a brand new website designed to represent the band. The purpose of the site was to tell fans about the group, purchase CD’s, join the fan club, and find out where the band was playing. By implementing a custom CMS, Ceili Rain was able to keep the content fresh with images, events, and news releases. By keeping the content fresh, fans reported staying on the site longer and visiting more often to acquire information about the band, obtain concert dates and buy Ceili Rain merchandise.

To create a more interactive community, Balance Studios developed a blog where Halligan and the band can talk with the fans, while also helping him strategize email campaigns and ezines. The fans are sent emails, ezines and links to the blog to keep them updated on what’s coming next from Ceili Rain. From the new website design, Balance worked with Ceili Rain on their merchandise design, CD covers and DVD development to ensure their brand was maintained. In addition, Balance Studios has concepted and created three music videos that were filmed in the US and Ireland. These videos are shown on television, Ceili Rain’s MySpace Page and their website.

In May of 2009 and March 2011, Balance created, designed and developed a new website for the launch of the groups 8th and 9th albums.

DinosaurUsExploreUs.com

Believe Animation needed a website to showcase their upcoming animated children's television series, DinosaurUs ExploreUs. An important component was to highlight their fundraising efforts for the television pilot. As importantly, since the show's concept is all about travel, that integration of a Travelogue highlighted the exciting place the Dino's have and will visit.. Balance helped create a fun and interactive site for kids, potential investors, and investors alike to find out more about the show and all things Dino! Balance also helped create a customized crowd funding section of the website to aid in the fundraising efforts-this is similar to a shopping cart concept where the visitors remain on the DinosaurUs ExploreUs website throughout the donation process.

Come To The Manger

Carent Records commissioned Balance to concept, design, and develop the national branding/marketing components and multi-media structure for the launch of Gospel Singer Marnell Tanner’s newest Christmas album, “Come To The Manger” as well as his other two albums.

To aid in the CD sale efforts, Balance designed and created a strategic combination of CD promotions through a branded, easy-to-use, CD sales specific microsite that makes purchasing the CD easy, cross promotes Marnell’s other 2 CD’s, captures visitor data for future online marketing initiatives, and integrated robust statical tracking.

Customers are able to purchase CD(s) right on the website and the orders are sent directly to Carent Records fulfillment house. Tying directly to the fulfillment house helped eliminate an additional step for Carent and made their shipping process more efficient.

Testimonial

From animation, to broadcast, to strategic marketing, to software development, to advanced interactive media and web design - who else does all this? Considering the options, I couldn't imagine having worked with anyone but Balance Studios.

Balance was with us from conception to creation - actively involved in every aspect of the creative process of developing our new site. They ingenuously created a customized website that repositioned our magazine in a dynamic way. Bringing to life something that, in all honesty, I didn't think was possible.

They're experts at creating innovative and intuitive interface, and have a brilliant approach to the development process.
From the beginning they explored every possibility and examined the site's design and function from every angle, making sure we would maximize the users experience, while giving us maximum results.

Being able to log into a system like INSPIRE and check the files, records and general progress of a site in such a simple way is an invaluable tool and made such a daunting undertaking seem almost routine. Simply put, INSPIRE is genius, and I couldn't imagine working on any future project without it.

I'm in love with this company.

Enterprise Systems Group (ESG) wanted to update their online presence in order to communicate with their clients and prospective clients. A four-part strategy was created, including a new website, password protected customer portal, blog, and an e-Newsletter. The ESG website redesign highlighted their products and services, allowing them to incorporate images and videos and becoming a 24/7 sales tool for prospective clients. Their original site was very limiting in terms of content management, so they wanted a custom application that would allow the site administrator to update and maintain the site with ease. Balance developed the website, including a custom Content Management System, allowing ESG to maintain the entire website, as well as retrieve customer data submitted through the website.

ESG Sales Portal

Enterprise Systems Group (ESG) wanted to update their online presence in order to communicate with their clients and prospective clients. A four-part strategy was created, including a new website, password protected customer portal, blog, and an e-Newsletter. Another piece created for ESG was an online portal for their sales force and customers. The site administrator of the portal has the ability to set up users at three levels - administrator, sales representative and customer. Once an individual is set up with a username and password, they are able to log in and access the folders and documents assigned to them. The administrator also has the ability to allow individual usernames  to see training videos, sales representative contact information and promotions.

With a long-standing partnership, KI worked with Balance Studios to design and develop a custom built Content Management System (CMS) that not only allowed KI to maintain every aspect of their web sites but also allowed KI to generate new websites, called “microsites”, for their five core vertical markets.

The CMS currently houses the information for ki.com, kihealthcare.com, kieducation.com, kigovernment.com, kibusiness.com and pallastextiles.com. (a KI sister company.) Starting with kihealthcare.com, Balance collaborated on the design and functionality of these sites in addition to full development. KI is able to generate and create unlimited new websites from this custom CMS application

To create the individual microsites, raw content is populated into a database by KI staff via the convenient backend interface. Directly from this database, a website is generated where users can browse to find product information, industry resources and specification tools for KI’s vertical markets.

The custom CMS allows the site administrator to modify all main navigation and sub-navigational links, the website colors, as well as all of the content on the website - from text to images to PDFs. There is a multi-level user administration system allowing specific users to only access certain areas of the website. In addition, all assets are tied together for all of the microsites, meaning when a product is updated in one area - it is carried through the rest of the sites automatically.

KI Click 2 Zoom

Balance worked with KI on the design and development of their 5 core vertical market websites (microsites). An important part of the development was to create online tools to engage the visitors aiding in increased sales. One of these additional features on the KI website that is used in combination with the “See It…Spec It” tool (see the See It...Spec It project sample), the “Click 2 Zoom” tool lets users switch out fabric options on the various furniture, then preview fabrics using a zoom-in and zoom-out feature to show thread level detail. Providing this technology of seeing the customer’s selected fabric and wood choice on the product in real time increases KI’s ability to sell furniture over the competitors. Balance created the technology that the site administrator can upload an image and the software breaks it down into many small images, which produces the thread level detail. Any of the fabrics on the KI microsites can utilize this technology. A visitor can email a sample of the fabric to a colleague or print a sample, which includes fabric information

KI See It, Spec It

Balance worked with KI on the design and development of their 5 core vertical market websites (microsites). An important part of the development was to create online tools to engage the visitors aiding in increased sales. Each of the KI microsites gives users access to design tools that help them specify projects. The custom created “See It..Spec It” swatching tool lets users select fabric and finish options on selected furniture pieces in real time. By giving designers the ability to zoom in on a photo, the swatching tool provides a high level of product detail such as texture, weaves and seams. In addition, PDFs can be created for printing or e-mailing to show customers what the final furniture product would look like with the selected fabric. The site administrator has the ability via the CMS to add new products and change the fabrics and finishes. Working hand in hand with KI on the creation of the See It, Spec It tool, the whole tool is custom designed and programmed to match the needs of KI and their customers.

An important part of the development was to create online tools to engage the visitors aiding in increased sales. As KI's presence spans across the entire world and involves numerous sales representatives, to make it easier on the customer, KI added a sales office map to the microsites. The visitor selects their country, and then can see the sales offices in that country. In the United States, the sales offices are broken down by state. Balance designed and developed the interactive map, allowing visitors to click on the red dots to see sales information, as well as navigate through the dropdown and links. The map is updatable via the custom content management system, allowing the site administrator to make changes at any time

Manitowoc Library Intranet

Manitowoc Public Library is the center of information for Manitowoc County, both within the library walls and their online presence. Because of the amount of data stored at the library and on their servers, a majority of the information was not accessible both online and off. The initial project brief entailed a complete overhaul of their online web presence and internal intranet system. The end goal… to have a more user-friendly and organized website that houses the enormous amount of content made assessable to every demographic. The implementation of the password protected intranet housing a robust document storage application to allow library staff to access internal events and documents anywhere the internet is available has become an invaluable resource to the library staff. The user administration allows the site administrator to assign access to specific folders assigned to individual staff members. The event calendar created for the main website ties into the custom content management system, allowing internal events to be shown only on the intranet for library staff eyes only.

ColumbiaMD Blog

Columbia, MD was working on revitalizing their downtown area and wanted a blog to communicate this information to residents of Columbia, as well as potential visitors. The microsite highlights the different areas of potential growth - residential, commercial and retail. A main component of the microsite is information capture, as well as sharing the information from the blog through social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and via email.

Balance was hired to create a custom website design and custom website programming. The website utilizes WordPress for the blog. Since downtown is a hub for music and fine arts, the blog featured images and video from the downtown events.

Once commissioned to begin, Balance designed and developed and interactive website where visitors are able to find out more about the Walk, sign up to become a walker or join a group of walkers, and sponsor individual walkers or walking groups, as well as process their registration payments. Using a custom Share Widget and the Share This Widget, visitors were able to invite friends and family to walk or sponsor right from the website. The custom content management system allows the site administrator to update and maintain the majority of the content on the website, including the videos (which are pulled from YouTube).

Pullman Porter Website

The National Railroad Museum commissioned Balance Studios to concept, design, and develop the multi-media and branding/marketing components of their newest exhibit "Pullman Porters: From Service to Civil Rights". The overall goal of the exhibit is to "edu-tain"- to create an entertaining and informational story/experience with an exhibit flow-thru that peaks the interest and excitement of the visitor by providing an interactive verses spectator experience. The Pullman Porter exhibit combines the traditional museum exhibit concept of models and artifacts with modern and sometimes, ultra modern technology. Featuring the exhibit's fundraising video, 3D renders of the Pullman Porter and 3D Pullman AVATAR, Balance developed a website as a quick and accessible venue to send potential sponsors to learn more about the exhibit.

As part of the exhibit development, Balance concepted, designed and programmed a historical interactive kiosk highlighting music of the times, oral history video with actual Pullman Porters, as well as a short the film Memoirs of My Grandfather – a personal look at Emanuel Hurst through the eyes of his grandson. (Emanuel was a Pullman Porter that is the focal point of the exhibit as seen in the photo-real 3D animation AVATAR of Emanuel who is the exhibit spokesperson - see www.BalanceAnimationStudios.com).
